Even though market cap is a widely used metric, it can sometimes be misleading. A good rule of thumb is that the usefulness of any given cryptocurrency’s market cap metric increases in proportion with the cryptocurrency’s trading volume. If a cryptocurrency is actively traded and has deep liquidity across many different exchanges, it becomes much harder for single actors to manipulate prices and create an unrealistic market cap for the cryptocurrency.
Given the thousands of cryptocurrencies in existence and the high volatility associated with most of them, it’s understandable you might want to take a diversified approach to investing in crypto to minimize the risk that you might lose money.
Competing metaverse Decentraland was this year’s number seven performer, after its MANA token soared nearly 40-fold. The entry of institutional players was a large contributor to gains for both SAND and MANA. As you venture into the realm of cryptocurrency trading, remember that learning is an ongoing process. Markets can be unpredictable, and cryptocurrency markets are particularly volatile. Types of cryptocurrency
In December 2017, Bitcoin reached a price of $20,000 per Bitcoin. So, anyone holding 50 Bitcoins or more became a millionaire. In January 2015, 50 Bitcoins would have cost you just $10,000. That’s a profit of $990,000! Crazy, right?
The first alternatives to the original crypto—later termed altcoins—didn’t appear on the scene until 2011, with the likes of Litecoin (LTC) and Namecoin (NMC). It wasn’t until Ethereum (ETH) launched in 2015 that altcoins gained popularity.
Ethereum has its own native altcoin called Ether or ETH. All other crypto protocols based on Ethereum have created native assets, and these are referred to as tokens. They typically adhere to the base protocol standards, such as ERC-20 on Ethereum.
Security tokens are digital equivalents of traditional securities existing on a blockchain. Think of any regulated conventional financial security such as equity shares, or property rights. These can be represented on the blockchain, and their performance can be tracked from anywhere in the world.
There’s also a distinction between coins and token. Bitcoin and altcoins like Ethereum that run on their own blockchain are considered coins. When most people think of cryptocurrency, they probably think of crypto coins like Bitcoin.
